7 Emotions to Master The Avatar State

“You must gain balance within yourself before you can bring balance to the world.”

Those are the words of Guru Pathik, the Guru who taught Avatar Aang how to control the Avatar State and tap into it at will.

Of course I am talking about the series “Avatar: The Last Airbender”.

That series was a real Banger in my childhood (and still is).

Let me tell you about it a bit, if you are not familiar with it.

The story takes place in a universe where people can bend Water, Earth, Fire and Air. Manipulate it, Move it and Shape it as they will.

Bending always fascinated me, I didn’t see it as magic but as a deep connection with reality, one which opens up the ability to manipulate it.

Anyway, With The 4 Elements, there are 4 Nations: The Water Tribe (North and South), The Earth Kingdom, the Fire Nation and the Air Nomads.

Long Ago, the 4 Nations lived in harmony, then everything changed when the Fire Nation Attacked. Only the Avatar, Master of all 4 Elements could stop them, but when the world needed him most, he vanished. 100 Years of war passed and then the new Avatar was found in an Icicle. From that point the story follows his journey in mastering his abilities as an Avatar and restoring peace to the world.

The Avatar has unique characteristics that differentiate him from ‘Normal’ Benders.

First, as said, he has control over all 4 elements.

Second, he has the ability to enter the ‘Spirit World’, a parallel plane of reality that coexists alongside the mortal world, and is home to the spirits, immortal supernatural entities which often embody different aspects of life and nature (More Here).

Third, The Avatar can Tap into “Avatar State”, Which allows the Avatar to channel vast cosmic energies and the knowledge of previous Avatars, granting him increased strength and the ability to perform especially powerful and extraordinary feats of bending.

When the Avatar enters the Avatar State, his entire body emits light, illuminating his eyes and mouth from the inside.

Basically, a God-Mode.

In Order to Access the Avatar State on will, the Avatar must open up his 7 Chakras, face his own emotions in order to let the energy flow freely inside the body and channel cosmic energy.

I watched the series as a child and thought to myself “Wow, that’s some crazy stuff”, I thought this is a part reserved only for the TV.

Then I grew up and discovered that Hinduism talked about Chakras for ages. About making peace with emotions, balancing our own energy and harnessing the power of it, in the journey to Enlightenment.

The Avatar State is the equivalent of Real-Life Enlightenment, the whole glowing body is just a way to convey the illumination one can tap into when dealing with one's own emotions.

The absolute alignment with the universe, the immense power, the strength, the connection. All represent Complete control and expanded Awareness of thoughts and actions.

In order to balance Chakras, we need to do internal work with ourselves, with meditating, making peace with past experiences and facing certain emotions.

This is a process of asking ourselves questions regarding each emotion anchored to each Chakra, then answering them, with maximum honesty and openness.

Like Water, in order to get a clear view, we need to calm the ripples.

The clearer we make our own feelings, the more balance and stillness we achieve.

For some, the term “Chakra” could sound a little Woo-Hoo, and whether Chakras physically exist or not is not relevant here.

The important part I want to convey is the emotional dealing, facing an emotion and thoughts in order to “open” the flow of each Chakra.

Dealing with deep-rooted emotions can be an extremely powerful experience, the resolution of those experiences will grant us strength and better control over ourselves.

There are 7 Chakras, each Chakra is controlled by a certain emotion. Let’s start balancing from the bottom up:

  1. Earth Chakra (Muladhara, the Root Chakra):

Located in the base of the spine. Deals with survival and blocked by fear.

Fear of losing our life can paralyze us from taking action on our goals. In our modern times, fear can come in different shapes and forms, most of them do not pose a real life risk, but still create a feeling of constant survival, keeping us on an anxious edge.

Balancing that Chakra will result in a sense of security and stability.

In Order to balance the Earth Chakra, ask yourself- “What am I most afraid of?”

Let your Fear become clear to you, visualize it, picture it in your mind.

Immerse yourself in those pictures until you feel comfortable, until the physical reaction to those images soften, until you can accept the worst case scenarios that run in your mind.

Even if it’s Death (of you or of a loved one), even if it’s losing all of your possessions. No matter how terrible that picture is, calm yourself while seeing it.

In order to Open your Earth Chakra, you Must surrender those Fears.

Surrendering those fears and accepting the worst will result in a more calm existence, by law or contrast. We simulated the worst possible imaginable scenario, we got used to it and now daily existence seems not that scary.

Knowing that we already handled the worst, gets any other not-so-worse scenarios into perspective.

  2. Water Chakra (Svadhisthana, the Sacral Chakra):

Located in the lower abdomen. Deals with Pleasure and blocked by guilt.

Sometimes we think we don’t deserve to feel pleasure because of past mistakes. It’s easy to get into a loop of self torturing, thinking about how we caused pain and suffering to others in the past, and take that as a reason to think we don’t deserve to feel satisfaction in the present.

In order to balance that Chakra, Look at all the guilt which burdens you. Look at all the past weight you carry with you to this day like a prisoner attached to a chain and ball.

Ask Yourself-” What do I blame myself for?”

Accept the reality that those things happened, but do not let them cloud and poison your energy.

Forgive yourself, understand that your ability to look back and recognize your wrongdoings shows that you are not that same person who made those mistakes, that you ascended and gained experience from those past mistakes, and now you are able to see them and act in a different, better way.

Balancing the Water Chakra will cause an increase in sexual energy, creative energy, and connection to your own emotions.

  3. Fire Chakra (Manipura):

Located in the Stomach. Deals with Willpower and blocked by Shame.

We have a tendency to feel ashamed of ourselves. Shame on parts of our body, shame on our thoughts, Ideas and goals. Shame on our liking and disliking in life.

By shaming ourselves, we limit our self image. We dim the light on parts of us that should shine in full power, parts of us that make us who we are. We shame ourselves and diminish the potential of our own growth. Shame turns off the flame that pushes us to grow out of our current shell.

Shame is internal, you and only you dictate whether something about you is shameful or not. You are the one who decides to be proud. You hold the control on who will take the throne, either shame or pride.

In order to balance that Chakra, Ask yourself-

” What am I Ashamed of?”

“What are my biggest Disappointments in myself?”

Accept and love all aspects of who you are, even mistakes, even failures.

Those parts are what make you the character you are.

Forgive yourself, don’t hold too much grudge to your past self, understand he made the decisions he thought to be the right ones to make, even if in retrospect those were mistakes.

Release the self-judgment, it only turns off your Willpower Flame.

  4. Heart Chakra (Anahata):

Located in the Heart. Deals with Love and Blocked by Grief.

Grief can deceive us to think that love is limited, make us believe that love which passed will never come back.

Remember that Love is a form of Energy, and it swirls all around us.

Old love has not left this world, it is still inside of your heart and is Reborn in the Form of a new Love.

In order to open the Heart Chakra- Lay all your grief in front of you, Release Sadness and Loss.

    Let the Pain Flow away.

Feel the Love vibrating around you, tune yourself into its frequency.

Welcome New Love into your life, in whatever shape it takes.

  5. Sound Chakra (Vishuddha, The Throat Chakra):

Located in the Throat. Deals with Truth and blocked by lies, the lies we tell ourselves.

We all tell ourselves stories about who we are, what we do, our strengths, weaknesses, what we like and what not. Those stories will dictate our reality, the universe will act according to any story we are convinced to be true.

In order to Open that Chakra- Release your Denial and own Lies.

You cannot lie about your own true Nature.

You cannot lie about your true desires and wants.

Tricking yourself will only cause suffering.

Observe the story you tell yourself, Question it, detect the weak spots, those parts where you have a slight doubt about the truth of the matter.

Dig deep and ask bold questions, see through your own convictions.

Don’t try to run or hide, Align your thoughts according to your true nature.

Align your speech, the spells you cast will dictate the nature of your reality.

  6. Light Chakra (Ajna, Third Eye Chakra):

Located in the center of the forehead. Deals with Insight, Blocked by illusion.

    Our senses constantly fool us.

The picture created by them is never an accurate description of reality.

We are in an eternal state of illusion.

The greatest Illusion of this world is the illusion of separation, things you think are separate and different, are actually one and the same.

We are all one people, but we live as if divided, we’re all connected, everything is connected.

Search for the illusions, see through them, be aware of the fact that your senses provide you a picture that will never be full, that’s the only way to be less of a fool.

Awareness of the illusion is the first and most important step we can take.

  7. Thought Chakra (Sahasrara, The Crown Chakra):

Located at the Crown of the head. Deals with pure Cosmic energy and blocked by earthly attachments.

Meditate on what Attaches you to this world.

Let all of those attachments go, let them flow down the river, forgotten.

Learn to let go, otherwise you cannot let the pure cosmic energy flow in from the universe.

Realize, Letting go of attachments does not mean the attached thing truly disappears.

Letting go of attachments means letting go of the feeling of potential loss, of the feeling of not being able to live without a certain thing or person.

Releasing attachments redirecting the feeling of home. Home is not a certain place or a person anymore, the whole universe turns into your home. You feel safe and protected wherever you go.

When you release attachments, you are able to connect to your higher perfect self.

you become a vessel and let the universe flow inside of you.

The Universe will Drain old parts, cut rotten habits, and Fill you with new pure fluids which will give a different sense of existence.

Emotions are loaded with energy, that energy affects the way we feel and act in the world. Facing Emotions, making peace with them, and balancing them, will connect us more to our deeper self.

Only by facing ourselves and resolving parts of us, we get into an equilibrium state of inner harmony.

Balancing our energy will tune our inner transmitter, result in sending the right signals out, and attracting more precise things into our life.

I wish you a happy weekend, much love to you and Yours,

Yuval.
